On Sunday, September 13, 2026, an accidental ammonia gas leak broke out at the state-affiliated Southern Fertilizer Company in Khor Al-Zubair, Basra, Iraq. Emergency teams and chemical specialist units managed to control the suffocating gas cloud, but the disaster killed two workers, required 10 employees to be rescued from inside the facility, and sent nearly 50 local residents to hospitals suffering from severe breathing issues.

This tragic accident in Iraq is an urgent wake-up call for Pakistan. Major fertilizer complexes across our country handle the exact same dangerous chemical on an even larger scale:

✔️Sadiqabad / Goth Machhi (Punjab): Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC) & Fatima Fertilizer

✔️Daharki & Mirpur Mathelo (Ghotki, Sindh): Engro Fertilizers & FFC

✔️Mianwali & Sheikhupura (Punjab): Agritech Limited & Fatima Fertilizer.

While these mega-factories help grow crops for Pakistan, they store massive amounts of dangerous chemicals. Rough estimates show that a single plant can store anywhere from 2,000 to over 10,000 metric tons of anhydrous ammonia on-site. Legally, factories are only permitted to store the exact maximum amount approved in their government-issued Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license. Furthermore, strict technical safety rules forbid filling pressure tanks above 85% of their volume to leave space for gas expansion and prevent explosions.

The liquid ammonia is kept locked inside heavy pressure tanks. If a pipe breaks or a valve leaks, this liquid instantly turns into a toxic gas cloud. Breathing it chokes a person, while direct contact causes severe chemical burns to the skin and eyes.

Even though large factories use modern computers and automated safety controls, their massive size remains a constant threat—a major leak can send toxic gas spreading for miles into nearby towns. The danger is often worse at smaller facilities like local ice factories and cold storages. Many of these older buildings use rusty valves, lack gas alarm systems, and sit directly next to crowded neighborhoods.

Under Pakistani environmental laws, the Environmental Protection Tribunal (EPT) has the power to force polluting factories to pay direct cash compensation to affected neighbors for health problems, ruined crops, or lost land value, while also paying for the complete cleanup of the area.

More importantly, people living near these factories do not have to wait for a disaster to happen. Both ordinary citizens and government officials have the explicit legal right and duty to take proactive legal action now—forcing factory management to install strict safety controls before an accident occurs, as well as placing cautionary awareness billboards to warn local residents and keep the public informed.
